BBT/School of Russian Ballet Arts Education Program:
Fairy Tales in Motion
Program Description:
During the first few classes, time is spent on reading the fairy tale
and providing basic dance instruction. After the class has become
familiar with the fairy tale, the BBT instructor guides the students in
choreographing their own original ballet based on the story they have
just read. Therefore class time is divided between dance instruction
(about 15 minutes) and rehearsing for their original ballet (30 minutes).
Throughout the entire class, students are given many participatory
roles in the creation of the ballet, which allows them to be directly
engaged in making art rather then just being instructed. In this
capacity, the children serve as judges; choosing which peer plays which
character. They serve as composers; choosing the music that best fits
each role and they are choreographers; creating their own dances. They
even design their own costumes. The BBT dance instructor’s role is to
provide a framework and a vocabulary for the students to work with, but
the goal of the program is to allow the students to operate as a team and
take ownership of the ballet. In this way, the students are engaged in
understanding dance and literature more thoroughly and learn how to
empathize with different characters, thus making their learning
experience a more fulfilling one.
How literacy is built-into Fairy Tales in Motion:
At the beginning of the workshop the class reads the fairy tale.
When the students audition for their role, they will be asked to
write a character description of the role they would like to dance.
In preparation for the performance of the original fairy tale,
students will write and design flyers announcing the debut of their
ballet which will be distributed to school faculty, friends and family.
To inspire their own creative writing, students will also be given
exercises on writing their own fairy tale.
For programs of a longer duration, instruction will also be
provided on writing dance reviews and critiques.
