IRINA ROIZIN

Founder and executive director

Founded BBT in 1987

In 1987, Irina founded BBT as a school of Russian ballet for the local community in Brighton Beach. Since that time, BBT has expanded its range of dance class offerings, created a touring professional dance company, developed a well-respected Arts in Education program, and performed in all five of New York City's boroughs. By emphasizing original choreography and attracting a world-class teaching faculty, Irina has transformed BBT into a center of excellence in dance and one of the preeminent Russian cultural institutions in New York City. For her devotion to the local community, Irina has been recognized by a number of prominent New York City politicians, including Mayor Michael Bloomberg, former Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, and Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz.

As the artistic director at BBT, Irina Roizin has produced, written and designed over 20 productions, including a number of classic ballets ("The Nutcracker," "The Sleeping Beauty"), folk dances, and modern dance productions (Russian cabaret "The Empress"). Each year, the Millennium Theater in Brighton Beach is the venue for two BBT productions, the "World of Dance" and "A Winter Fairy Tale," that highlight new choreography as well as traditional folk dances from the Russian, Ukrainian, Georgian, Uzbek, Indian, African and Spanish cultures.

Irina has also designed a special children's program that teaches children as young as two years old about ballet, while correcting their posture, rhythm and other physical problems. At BBT, Irina teaches Pre-Ballet and Ballet O-1, Ballet O-A, Beginner's and Adult Ballet. These classes place a special emphasis on preparing children for future live stage performance opportunities.

In addition, Irina is the creative force behind the spectacular costume creations in all of BBT's full-length productions. Based on her experience as a costume designer for various New York theater productions, Irina has overseen the development of BBT Costumes, which features authentic folk costumes from Russian and Ukraine, as well as new creations for children and adults that are at times glamorous, fantastic, and whimsical.

Irina is an acclaimed performing artist of folk, ballet and character dance. After training at the Lvov Circus School in Lvov, Ukraine, Irina studied under Mikhail Krichevets, People's Artist of the USSR, at the Children Performing Arts School in Ukraine. She was a soloist at the Ukrainian National Folk Dance Company "Unost" for four years and a soloist for four years at the Ukrainian National Folk Dance Company "Mria." For the two years prior to founding BBT, Irina trained with Madame Rybak, a former teacher and choreographer at the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow.
